I planned to choose a book from the top of the Modern Library fiction list and another from the bottom to read at the same time. Slowly, I'd make my way to the middle. No. 2 on the list is "The Great Gatsby," but when I ordered it via STARCat, I inadvertently requested, not the novel itself, but a volume of commentary on the book.
So, this weekend I have just Booth Tarkington's "The Magnificent Ambersons." I'll pick up the Fitzgerald early next week.
Screw-up No. 2: When writing the column that ran in Saturday's Star-Gazette about my reading project, I forgot I had a Friday afternoon appointment with my dentist. Dr. Eric Peterson, whose office is in Elmira Heights, yanked out a couple of teeth Friday afternoon, including one very, very stubborn wisdom tooth. He did a great job, but this morning I am definitely feeling like I, well, just had a bunch of teeth extracted. So I'm not feeling up to writing very much today.
So, a little more on my reading project and "The Magnificent Ambersons" a little later.
